Fellows

The Fellows of the Western Orthodox University are charged with various responsibilities for administration and governance, being appointed by the Chancellor and Supreme Head of the University.

The structure of the University is as follows:

  • The Chancellor and Supreme Head of the University is the Prince-Abbot of San Luigi and Primate and Presiding Bishop of the Apostolic Episcopal Church, in his capacity as Catholicos of the Catholic Apostolic Church (Catholicate of the West).
  • The Senate is the executive body of the University, presided over by the Supreme Head, with power to make recommendations on any aspect of the University’s operations. It is responsible for teaching and research and for the executive operations of the University so far as academic affairs are concerned.
  • Faculties of the University are formed in given subject areas and can be constituted on a per-student basis where interdisciplinary work or work in unusual subject areas is contemplated. They may include Fellows of the University and/or external subject specialists. Currently there are two Faculties, of Theology and of Church Music.

All Fellows and specialists contribute their tutorial and examining expertise on a consultancy basis, being based at their own institutions or centres in various countries. No Fellow or member of faculty is an employee of the University. The Fellowship includes both members and non-members of the Abbey-Principality of San Luigi, the Apostolic Episcopal Church and the Catholicate of the West.

Not all Fellows undertake teaching duties for the University. Some are associated scholars or researchers, or hold an administrative position. The University also appoints distinguished persons to Honorary Fellowship, which may or may not be associated with teaching duties. For this reason, the University’s Fellowship includes some individuals with expertise that lies outside the University’s current range of academic programmes.

Additional tutorial and examining staff may be co-opted from the fellowship of the University’s sister institution European-American University, appointed as external specialists, or appointed ad hoc following student nomination and University approval. The University maintains additional lists of persons with teaching expertise in specialist areas who may be called upon as required, but who are not part of the University’s Fellowship.
