An article published in The Sun, a Nigerian newspaper, has reported inaccurate information about the Western Orthodox University.
The same information has been repeated in other media outlets, including https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/12/philanthropist-dimeji-oganla-bags-doctorate-award and https://thenationonlineng.net/dimeji-oganla-bags-doctorate-award as well as https://independent.ng/lagos-businessman-dimeji-oganla-bags-doctorate-degree
The University did not provide information to The Sun and has not at any time been contacted by that newspaper or any other media outlet to confirm the information in the article. The article states that one Oladimeji Oganla, also referred to as Dimeji Oganla, has received an honorary doctorate from the Western Orthodox University. However, that is not the case and no person of this name appears on the University’s Register of Graduates.
Two further inaccurate statements appear in the article. Firstly, it is stated that the University is in the United Kingdom. This is false, the University is currently based and derives its status to grant degrees from Florida in the United States of America, and formerly held degree-granting status in the Commonwealth of Dominica. The University is not a United Kingdom university and does not grant United Kingdom degrees, and at all times it has been careful to give no contrary impression to any party.
It is then stated falsely that the University has a campus in Ghana. The University has never established a campus in Ghana. The University was formerly affiliated with an existing education provider in Ghana via a partnership agreement, but this has since ended.
Lastly it is stated that other honorees include “Aare Adekunle Ishola Oluwatise-Oshodi, Apostle Solomon Moses Oni Mustapha, Dr Righteous Teiko Tagoe, Ipoade Adenkanmi Omilaju, Otunba Abayomi Odunowos and Dr (Mrs) Mbukpa Mary Godwin.” These people are completely unknown to the University and they have not received honorary degrees at any time from our institution.
The University considers it possible that the newspaper, other media outlets and possibly a number of other individuals named in the article may have been the victims of fraud by individuals impersonating the University. The University firstly disclaims any association with such practices, which are illegal as well as unethical. Secondly, the University guards against fraud by providing the online Register of Graduates upon which all honorary and earned graduates of the University are listed.
